Our Chief Goal in Life is Character Formation

by Dr Theodora Banigo Ekwevugbe

Hello, dear young believer.

I want you to know something it took me time to truly understand. The most important reason we are on this earth, the reason we pass through the furnace of this world, is not achievement, accumulation, or success. It is formation.

This earth is a furnace. Its systems are broken. We are exposed to brokenness early. Trauma shapes us. Relationships shape us. Pain shapes us. Even joy shapes us. The hardships, the celebrations, the betrayals, the struggles, and the seemingly good seasons, all of it exists under the sovereign hand of God. And through it all, God is doing one primary work in us.

Character formation.

Character like Jesus.

Not success like Jesus.

Not influence like Jesus.

Not fame like Jesus.

But character like Jesus.

By the end of our lives, when we stand before our Maker, what we accumulated will matter little. What we accomplished will matter little. Yes, impact matters. Yes, contribution matters. Yes, legacy matters. But they are secondary to one question:

Who did you become?

Did we leave the earth as broken as we entered it, or do we leave clothed in white, in clean linen robes, unstained and purified?

This does not happen by hiding from difficulty. It happens by walking through it, letting relationships shape us, letting hardship refine us, letting God expose us, correct us, and cleanse us. By judging ourselves so that we will not be judged. By allowing the process to produce patience, humility, purity, and character.

God is preparing a bride for Christ.

A spotless bride.

A purified bride.

A bride who has made her robe white.

Scripture is clear.

“If a man purifies himself, he will be a vessel unto honour, fit for the Master’s use, thoroughly furnished for every good work.”

So believer, do not be distracted.

The chief aim of your life is not wealth, fame, family, success, platforms, or accomplishment. Those things are not evil, but they are not the goal.

The goal is this:

Christ formed in you.

Let everything you build, pursue, suffer, and celebrate become a vehicle for transformation. Let everything serve the purpose of forming the image of Christ in you. Keep your eyes fixed on Him, so you may be transformed into His likeness.

That is the work.

That is the aim.

That is the purpose.

God bless you
