Why Raising Mentally Strong Kids Matters More Than Ever

by Dr Theodora Banigo Ekwevugbe

Mental fragility is a real problem. And it is becoming very clear to me why we must raise mentally strong kids.

Mental resilience is a superpower, a God power that the next generation must have to thrive. Everyone must be mentally strong and resilient, with the ability to moderate emotions, control them, understand them, take their feedback, yet dominate them.

The ability to pull oneself out of turmoils and emotional downpits. To talk yourself out of despair, to encourage yourself, to generate hope, to hold on to hope, to keep pushing when tired or low on energy. To drive yourself, to motivate yourself, to generate strength, to recognize energy sources.

That is self-regulation of energy, emotion, and power to act. The mental soundness, clarity, and resilience to triumph over hardship. The ability to rule over your emotions so they remain workers under your command, good and necessary litmus tests of situations and the environment, but still subject to you, kept in their place.

Our kids must have this mental and emotional soundness if they are to thrive in life. To succeed in work, in business, in marriage, in raising their children, in perseverance, in faith, in caring for their bodies, and in life as a whole.

So many adults are limited by lack of mental resilience. Limited from reaching their potential. They turn back at difficulty, give up when things feel challenging, things feel overwhelming all too soon, and this, all because of an underdeveloped capacity for resilience.

It can be a handicap.

A mental handicap indeed.

And it can be a robber of potential.
